the most prominent memory of my trip to europe in 1983 was not the excitement of traveling abroad for the first time but the discomfort of flying in a smoke-filled airplane for almost six hours. even in the non-smoking section, i was coughing and choking during the entire flight. and whenever i had to use the restroom, i had to hold my nose as i passed through the smoking area to the lavatory.
if i ruled the world, i would certainly outlaw cigarette smoking in all public places. fortunately for smokers everywhere, i don't rule the world. nevertheless, i fully support the idea behind the new york state legislature's recent bill to ban smoking in all restaurants in new york state.
according to the new york times, officials in both houses of the legislature say the legislation is "very close to fruition." california is the only other state i know that has banned smoking in restaurants and bars, and despite the predictions of some restaurant owners, i haven't read any reports that restaurant attendance has fallen off significantly since the bill passed. why should it? food is a necessity. people need to eat.
assigning designated smoking and non smoking areas in restaurants is not enough. smoke travels quickly beyond the imaginary boundaries set up between tables and booths. as a patron, i should be able to enjoy my meal without choking on someone else's smoke. the same is true in bars and nightclubs, although i would exercise more legislative restraint in this setting because dancing and drinking are not as essential as eating. still, why should i have to endanger my lungs just to go dancing?
i would ban smoking on public sidewalks and streets as well. what you do in the privacy of your own home is your business, but once you pollute the rest of the world with cancer-inducing toxic fumes, it becomes the government's business. i'm tired of asking people to put out their cigarettes or asking waiters to patrol the boundaries of their restaurant's smoking section. so if this new bill becomes law, as i hope it does, non-smokers will finally be able to enjoy their restaurant meals without having to police the artificial lines of separation that divide the two sections in restaurants.
the source of air pollution is vehicle exhaust emissions. the original sky is blue and blue, but now some big cities, dark clouds, the sky is dazed, and, people smell car exhaust, can be very uncomfortable, and cause cancer. cars bring convenience, but the fumes also cause trouble. so i'm going to invent an environmentally friendly car.
the car is a lot like a normal car, and the car has no exhaust pipes and only a few honeycombed holes in the back of the car. people can't help but wonder, so how does the tail gas deal with it? and what are the holes in the back? it turns out that the car exhaust comes through a pipe in the car all the way to a big box in the trunk. the first small box of exhaust gas into the first big box, box spews disinfection powder, after disinfection of exhaust gas after a filter paper wall in the second small box, this small box also jet air disinfection, second after disinfection of exhaust gas through a filter paper wall come chinese medicine steaming box. the box is filled with the powder of traditional chinese medicine, which gives off the heat from a traditional chinese medicine. after three disinfection, the tail gas comes to the perfume box after the thickest filter wall. the exhaust immediately becomes a non-toxic and harmless aroma, and then the aroma passes through the small hole in the back to the car, and a series of decontamination is completed.
with the popular visitation of the internet, network classrooms are gaining more and more popularity. as a new teaching pattern, network classrooms have become an effective compliment to traditional classrooms. so some people propose on question will network classrooms replace traditional classrooms?
as to this question, the opinions vary from one to another. some people think it quite possible for network classrooms to take the place of traditional classrooms. first, network classrooms needn t have face-to-face communication, and are not limited by time and place, which facilities both teachers and students. secondly, network classrooms release teachers from repeating the same contents. since the video or audio material can be played time and again.
however, many people have opposite stand points. they say that with online courses students like direct communication with teachers and their confusion can not be solved instantly. in addition, the computer system can not be guaranty to work staidly all the time. personally, both network classrooms and traditional classrooms are necessary for students. if traditional teaching patterns and motor ones like network classrooms can be combined together, more fruitful education is sure to be realized.
in recent years, people have been interested in making a long journey to some unfamiliar cities which are far from their hometown. one of their tourism purposes is mainly to experience the local culture and learn the traditions. however, someone doubts that people can obtain culture-related information through books, films and internet instead of travel. i disagree on this view to a certain degree, although books, films and internet are useful resources for providing valuable cultural information.
it is a time-saving way to search comprehensive cultural information concerning tourism destinations by using books and the internet. many published travel guide books have summarized helpful strategies and explored cultural landscape in detail for tourists like lonely planet and national geographic. people nowadays also tend to record their journey on some online travel websites such as trip advisor, which offer a convenient platform for worldwide travelers to share their own cultural experiences. also, general public may not get an insight into local customs and traditions when they are traveling, due to some objective limiting factors like holiday length, tourism budget and language barrier.
as primary travelling information sources, books, films and internet all have their obvious drawbacks. travel records on travel notes may have been out of date when tourists are reading them as everything is changing in a country in the age of globalization, including cultural sector. for example, spanish women have no longer used a fan as a kind of body language. besides, information from films and internet seems to show a lack of reliability. film is a kind of art which is exaggerated and dramatic in the respect of content description. on the internet, every net user can express their opinions to a same cultural phenomenon or traditional event so that the word-of mouth is not authoritative and objective to a high degree.
to summarise, relying on books, films and the internet to obtain cultural information is not enough because lacks trust and authority, even though these resources are sufficient and accessible. the combination of travel and knowledge (from books, films and internet) would be the best choice.

in many parts of the world, a traditional concept of family called four generations living together has been handed down for thousands of years. in old times, the eldest man usually dominated others without any challenge amid the overpopulated home. in comparison with modern society, such a place should be an effective habitat to keep greed and selfishness ,which is considered as born nature of humans, away as a consequence of helping each other and sharing property between family members under the supervision of the most influential man. however, over a thousand-year period those female members suffered extremely tough circumstances of s e x ual discrimination: they were in charge of childcare, household chores, farmingtopsoil clearing and planting, you name it. whats worse, they werent allowed to dine with men at the same table-leftovers filled up their bellies. conversely, in contemporary society, a growing number of females are fighting for more human rights, say, equality to males, and they are gaining ground! how to convince the fierce female tigers these traditions are their better destiny? no way!!!a better life can never be expected by only eliminating greed and selfishness. whereas it ought to be defined along with the following qualities: privacy respected, individual development, no s e x ual discrimination and a fair community with equal opportunities. in addition to my viewpoint, an appropriate way of education would probably a sensible solution to minimize the goddamn greed and selfishness in modern society instead of returning to the old society.
since the big country has been found at october 1st of 1949, the people’s republic of china has gone through a history of 62 years. looking back at the 62 years, especially in recent 30 years, we have made many great achievements in different fields. and china has been the second largest economy in the world in 2010. and as a chinese, i am so proud of our mother country.
however, on the other hand, we also have been losing many other good things such as beautiful environment and traditional culture when the gdp has increased quickly. and we also know that the traditional culture is the soul of an ancient nation. it is the most important thing. but we chinese seem to ignore this. and that many things happened in this year like to remind us to be awake of this phenomenon. the accident of our high speed trains had taken many people’s lives away in july. and that the 2-years-old girl had been hurt to die while 18 passers should to save her.
and in my opinion, the culture and civilization are so important that we can’t lose them. however the economy and technology have been developed, we will have nothing when we lost the important things. as a student, i have no idea that what should i do. and i just want to say, we must develop our traditional culture but not to abandon them.
