since the big country has been found at october 1st of 1949, the people’s republic of china has gone through a history of 62 years. looking back at the 62 years, especially in recent 30 years, we have made many great achievements in different fields. and china has been the second largest economy in the world in 2010. and as a chinese, i am so proud of our mother country.

however, on the other hand, we also have been losing many other good things such as beautiful environment and traditional culture when the gdp has increased quickly. and we also know that the traditional culture is the soul of an ancient nation. it is the most important thing. but we chinese seem to ignore this. and that many things happened in this year like to remind us to be awake of this phenomenon. the accident of our high speed trains had taken many people’s lives away in july. and that the 2-years-old girl had been hurt to die while 18 passers should to save her.

and in my opinion, the culture and civilization are so important that we can’t lose them. however the economy and technology have been developed, we will have nothing when we lost the important things. as a student, i have no idea that what should i do. and i just want to say, we must develop our traditional culture but not to abandon them.

in the days when a woman's entire obligation was to be a good daughter, a good wife and a good mother, men and women were far from equal. women suffered sexual discrimination until the so-called feminism came into being. nowadays, feminism has been running for over a century. result? it ran into the extreme of "equality" from my perspective.

most of us agree that men and women should enjoy equality in this modern society. but what on earth does this equality mean? to be "equal", those for feminism would like to share everything with men they split bills, apply for masculine jobs, etc. they intended to buy in all the advantages and disadvantages of being a man. on their long journey to the "equal world",they've forgotten some basic facts they are women. even school children know that women, after all, are different from men both physically and mentally. it is unwise, or even stupid,to ignore all these differences and pursue a so called "equal world". we couldn't expect a man to give birth to a baby as we couldn't expect the sun to rise in the west. likewise, we couldn't expect a woman to become the world's fastest runner,as is simple, but seems forgotten by those feminists.

equality is not bisecting everything. real equality should be built upon the common sense of the basic sexual differences.since some of the jobs can only be done well enough by men, women should not feel discriminated when we fail. after all, there're also some jobs, which can only be perfectly done with women's hands. these are not symbols of inequality, but natural laws. what really counts is equality in rights, reputation, etc. only when all the individuals value the spirit of being equal can women really enjoy equality with men.

some people think that university should not provide theoretical knowledge, but to give practical training that is beneficial to society.

do you agree or disagree?

the current hot issues concerning higher education include the one of whether university should provide theoretical knowledge or practical training. in my opinion, this issue is closely related to the different aims of different universities and the needs of the economic development of the respective country.

as we know, university education gives a student a better appreciation of such fields as art, literature, history, science, and human relations. therefore, it is necessary for the university to provide theoretical knowledge for those students who intend to receive liberal education.

most universities also have professional colleges that prepare students for careers, such as teachers colleges, agricultural or dental colleges. these colleges, apart from offering some liberal arts courses, usually allocate a certain period of time for professional training. for example, a student at teachers college usually takes a field training at a high school as a student teacher for two or three months.

another important factor on this issue is the needs of the economic development of a respective county. for instance, in china, a great number of advanced professional personnel are needed to keep the pace with the rapid economic development. therefore, cooperative education that combines classroom studies with practical work experience is more appropriate an education china needs at the present time.

in a word, how much emphasis that should be laid on theoretical knowledge or practical training is determined by the needs of the economy of a respective country and the needs of all-round personnel for a democratic society.

the bar chart given above reflects that the number of readers choosing paper book or electronic books experienced some changes during the past four years. the number of paper book readers decreased slowly from 10 million in 2010 to 8 million in 2013. however, during the same period, the number of electronic book readers increased steadily from 8 million to 12 million.

we learn from the bar chart that people in mounting numbers would like to choose electronic books while less people like paper books. what might account for this phenomenon? reasons can be listed as follows: for one thing, with the widespread availability of electronic devices such as smartphones, tablet pc and electronic reader,it is much easier for electronic books to be applied and popularized. secondly, compared with paper books, electronic books are characterized by convenience in terms of carrying and saving spaces. furthermore, the costs of purchasing and downloading electronic books are lower that of paper books, which enables readers to save a great deal of money. last but not least, electronic books sometimes stand for high fashion and efficiency.

whether electronic books will totally replace paper books one day still seems to be uncertain. however, no matter what kind of books will vanish, the habit of reading books should not be eliminated.

the government should control the amount of violence in films and on television in order to decrease the violent crimes in society. to what extent do you agree or disagree with this issue?

recently, the discussion about whether the government should control the amount of violence in films and on television has become a heated one. people take diverse attitudes towards this issue. before presenting my view, i seek to analyze the issue from different angles.

from some people’s point of view, there are many good reasons for controlling the amount of violence in films and on television. first, violent films and television can do harm to young people. because they contains numerous of erotic, corrupt and provoking episode, which can bring negative influence to na?ve young people. moreover, since young people are in the formative years, they are not mature enough. they always like imitating their idols, no matter right or wrong, which lead to the increasing of the juvenile delinquents. thirdly, violence begets violence. violent films and television can make people aggressive and cold-blooded, which enhance the violent crime in society. in a word, controlling the amount of violence in films and tv effectively can decrease the violent crimes in society and preserve social security.

many others, however, take a quite strong opposite attitude towards this issue. they believe violent media have their positive sides, which should not be controlled by government. to begin with, there are many valuable education functions in this kind of films and tv. because they can reflect the reality, and we can’t imagine that there aren’t any con information but only pro things in our world. secondly, if the government control the violent films and television, it must influence the development of the entertainment industry. last but not least, they can prepare children for the adult world and teach them to cherish life.

as far as i am concern, i strongly believe that the amount of violence in films and tv should be controlled. at the same time, we cannot deny the advantages brought by them. and the best policy is to develop the merits of the violent films and television, while grading and filtering them, describing that which are not fit for the children to watch.

today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold.

to what extent do you agree or disagree? (c6t1)

in some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing.

what do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?(c8t4)

increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.

to what extent do you agree or disagree.

what other measures do you think might be effective?(c8t3)

1. agree or disagree

2. the advantage outweigh the disadvantage

3. is it a positive or negative trend

1. discuss two views and give your opinion

2. what are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

1. in

如:“in 1979 beef was by far the most popular of these foods, with about 225 grams consumed per person per week.” (c7p.164)

1: the two tables contain sales data for fair-trade coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004, in five nations of europe. (c10p.163)

例2: these causes affected different regions differently in the 1990s. (c8p.162)

2. from

from 表示“时间的起点”,可译作“从……”,多用于“from…to/till…”中。

如:“this increased dramatically from about 500 km3 in 1900 to around 3,000 km3 in the year 2000. ”(c6p.163)

介词“from...to...”

between...and...

如:“the chart shows the time spent by uk residents on different types of telephone calls between 1995 and 2002.” (c9p.164)

介词 “between...and...”

3.during

during 表示“在……

如:“during this 25-year period the consumption of beef and lamb fell dramatically to approximately 100 grams and 55 grams respectively. ” (c7p.164) 其中“during this 25-year period”的意思是“在这25年间”。

就措辞来讲,也不会与开头段中的“between...and.../from...to...”

4.since

如:“consumption has fluctuated since 1990 but both now provide 24q. ” (c9p.168)

5.by

如:“the cost of insurance saw a rising trend, growing from only 2% to 8% by2001. ”(c8p.164)

1:by 2004, sales figures for both products had risen across the board.(c10p.163)

例2:by 2000 nuclear power, which was not used at all in australia, had developed into the main source. (c7p.168)

6. before

before 指“在……

如“expenditure on resources such as books had increased to 20% by 1991 before decreasing to only 9% by the end of the period.” (c8p.164)

7.after

ragon boat festival, often known as tuen ng festival or duan wu festival, is a traditional chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the chinese calendar. it is also known as the double fifth.[citation needed] it has since been celebrated, in various ways, in other parts of east asia as well, most notably korea.

the exact origins of duan wu are unclear, but one traditional view holds that the festival memorializes the chinese poet qu yuan of the warring states period. he committed uicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the chu government. the local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating qu's body. they also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat.

in the early years of the chinese republic, duan wu was also celebrated as "poets' day", due to qu yuan's status as china's first poet of personal renown.

today, people eat zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fishes) and race dragon boats in memory of qu's dramatic death.
